History of GEBCI

Gujarat Education Board of Catholic Institutions is a registered body under the Trust Act with the registration number “Gujarat / 3676 / Ahmedabad dated 14.06.1993”.  It is an association of Catholic educational institutions categorized under Religious Minority and hence enjoys the privileges enshrined in the Constitution as stated in Article 30 of the Constitution of India.  It encompasses the 03 dioceses of Gujarat State namely Ahmedabad, Vadodara and Rajkot withArchbishop Stanislaus Fernandes SJ as its President, Bishop Thomas Macwan (Ahmedabad Diocese), Bishop Godfrey De Rozario S. J. (Vadodara Diocese) and Bishop C. C. Jose. CMI (Rajkot Diocese) being its Joint-Presidents.  Initially, a total of 92 Catholic schools from all over the State of Gujarat were the registered members of GEBCI.

 

A special mention needs to be made of late Rev. Fr. Gerald Lobo who was instrumental in the formation and setting-up of this apex educational body of the Catholic Church in Gujarat.  It is in the fitness of things to dedicate the new GEBCI Education Policy to his memory.

 

At the General Body Meetings held on the 17th-18th of June, 2000 at The Diocesan Pastoral Centre, Nadiad and on the 17th-18th November, 2000 at Jivan Darshan, Vadodara the vision, aims / objectives, rules and regulations, guidelines, procedures and general governance of the GEBCI Institutions were enunciated and approved to come into force from June, 2001.  They will be guidelines for all GEBCI member educational institutions.
